How long have you been writing poetry?
I've been writing poetry since fifth grade. I started writing journal entries to express my feelings about home and school and they later evolved into poems.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from my surroundings. On my way home I might pass by a mural, see a couple holding hands, hear a song, or see a woman crying and that might be a source of inspiration. Sometimes friend might confide in me and I think they have a story that needs to be shared so I write for them.
Who is your favorite poet? Why?
I do not have just one favorite, but the top five are Willie Perdomo, Tara Betts, Buddy Wakefield, Aracelis Girmay, and Michael Cirelli. I love them because they changed what I thought poetry was. They allowed me to immerse myself into their lives and their hearts while digging deeper into my own.
What advice can you give young writers?
Read as much as possible. When you see how others tell their stories, you learn how to tell your own.
